Care Sector set to Grow

Despite the current economic difficulties, one area still taking on staff is the adult care sector.

A recent study of more than 200,000 students who graduated last year found that many more are now going into nursing or social work, while fewer are starting careers in finance.

Pembrokeshire currently has 44 job vacancies in its care sector.

To promote these and provide information on working in care, Pembrokeshire County Council's social care workforce development programme - with the support of local employers - will be running a Careers Week at various venues across the County from 11th May.

The event is aimed at people looking for a career change and those with experience caring for a relative or friend, who may be considering care work.

People will be able to discuss the adult social care jobs available with representatives of Pembrokeshire Council and local employers and there will also be an opportunity to speak to those already working in social care to gain an insight into the rewards and benefits of caring for others.

Councillor David Wildman, Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Care said the demand for social care was set to grow over the next 20 years.

"People are living longer, but not necessarily healthier, lives and so they may need more support as they get older," he said.

"Caring for others can be a very rewarding career and in these uncertain times provides rare job security."
